lewis fautzi hands in his fourth ep for figure yet, a collection of tunes that interlock seamlessly in a gradual progression, displaying the producers accurate skill of tailor-made tools for every energy-level. starting out with two elastic grooves, the a-side carefully sets the scene for what is yet to come later on. careful layers of rich acid riffs, precise placement of atmospheric details and fine-tuned textures - this clearly is the work of a burgeoning producer on top his game. keeping the finesse, but amping up the oomph, the b-side bursts with two heavy hitters that pull out all the stops. stomping, booming and driven by wild percussion, these tracks are sure to stir up a frenzy.

utter presents rgbpm, trevor jackson s four piece audio-visual work originally commissioned for a live performance at the optronica festival in 2007, on london s imax, the biggest screen in the uk. optronica, programmed by addictive tv/cinefeel in collaboration with the british film institute, held its second festival over five consecutive days at the imax, ica and bfi southbank in march 2007. a showcase of the most exciting talent working in visual music, optronica s 2007 event was a platform for live performances, talks, screenings and workshops from the likes of fennesz, peter greenaway and ryoichi kurokawa. jackson s piece took over six months to develop and yet was performed only once. on march 14th the premier of rgbpm opened the festival in spectacular fashion, jackson performing the music live with its accompanying hd visuals generated in real time using custom-built software created especially by weirdcore. a powerful multi-sensory experience, the event remains one of the defining moments of jackson s lengthy career. the visuals consist of abstract shapes synchronised perfectly to jackson’s soundtrack. choreographed to represent musical elements within each track, they explore the relationship between melody, colour, rhythm and form. the diverse soundtrack combines magical motorik experiments, demented acidic jams, melodic subterranean techno and dark discordant electronic soundscapes. it s a timeless selection of music that holds its own to this day. a decade on from rgbpm s lone airing, utter is proud to release all four parts together for the first time as a special 12- package, mastered and cut by helmut erler at d&m and housed in a sleeve designed by jackson himself.

the story of the great roots reggae harmony trio black uhuru is one defined by many unexpected twists and turns. in its best known form, led by michael rose and with founding member duckie simpson and the black american female vocalist, puma jones, the group would enjoy the greatest popularity of any act in the wake of bob marley’s untimely death in 1981, but the origins of the group lay in the turbulent waterhouse district during the mid-1970s. duckie first formed the group as uhuru, the swahili word for unity, with garth dennis as lead singer and don carlos to join him in harmony, after cutting an adaptation of the impressions’ “romancing to the folk song” at dynamics, “time is on our side” at randy’s for clive chin, and “slow coach” for raymond “benno” anderson, dennis drifted into the wailing souls and don carlos went solo, leading duckie to recruit rising waterhouse vocalist michael “tony” rose as lead singer, and errol nelson from the jays for harmony. their debut album, love crisis, was produced, voiced and mixed at king tubby’s studio by prince jammy and remains and outstanding example of jammy’s roots reggae production phase. the song “hard ground” vamps on a similar theme to marley’s “talking blues”: rose sings of a life of everyday hardship, with destitution and homelessness the pervading factors. on the extended dub portion and dub the instrumental cuts that follow the alternate vocal take of this enthralling 12-inch ep, you can hear the non-standard instrumentation that helps make the work so innovative, with winston wright’s harpsichord melody emphasising the hopelessness of rose’s emotive lyrics, the commanding rhythm and understated bass and guitar from robbie shakespeare and chinna smith completing the picture.

roots vocalist barry brown has an inimitable style that has long made him a favourite of reggae enthusiasts. drawing from the popular phrasing of horace andy, but morphing it into his own delivery through the kind of wordless slurring that occasionally resembles the sound of a quacking duck, brown found his way into the jamaican music scene through the many amateur west kingston talent contests of the early 1970s, along with fellow aspiring talents such as johnnie clarke, sugar minott and the african brothers, and the mighty diamonds. he also honed his vocal skills on local west kingston sound systems such as tape tone, together with other young dancehall-oriented youth such as barrington levy, sammy dread, roy taylor and tristan palmer. there are still conflicting claims as to who was the first to record brown, with production veteran bunny ‘striker’ lee and sugar minott among the contenders, but in any case, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, he produced a range of captivating work for various producers, much of which is rightly coveted today. ‘ital rock’ appeared on barry’s 1983 lp i’m still waiting, issued by rocktone international, a spin-off of sugar minott’s black roots outfit, based in queens, new york (with a further branch in toronto), the b-side has dean fraser’s previously unreleased electrifying saxophone cut, rescued from dub plate obscurity by jah fingers.

renowned argentinean artist franco cinelli returns to unlock recordings with three intricate cuts from the vault this september. one of argentina s most respected producers, franco cinelli has been making music for over two decades. the rosario-born artist has made a name for himself with excellent releases on the likes of djulz bass culture, esperanza and raum...music, not to mention his collaborative project alongside dario zenker named maria fresca on ilian tape. with so many of the upper echelons of house, techno and minimal supporting his tracks, including ricardo villalobos himself, franco cinelli s inimitable productions are not to be overlooked. originally released in 2009 and now finally getting a proper vinyl release, cinelli s remix of saccobros why not constructs an energetic narrative that extends over ten minutes. tight kicks work alongside looped atmospherics as a muffled hook and infectious sample add to the heightening suspense. cuts from the vault also sees two new productions from the argentinian. morph sense is the more twisted of the two, demonstrating a medley of clicks and whirrs whilst sci-fi inspired arpeggios operate throughout. as the name suggests, dub sine of the moon is the deepest cut on the package, with its crunchy percussion and subterranean tape delays that form a hypnotizing aesthetic from start to finish.

new york s p. leone is back with the second release on his newly launched e-missions imprint featuring work them records founder spencer parker on remix duties. born and raised in brooklyn, where he discovered the legendary storm rave parties run by frankie bones and adam x, p. leone cut his teeth djing in the lower east side of manhattan before making techno himself. before long the producer dropped his first two releases on work them records, joining a roster spanning radio slave, spencer parker, young male, anetha and physical therapy. e-missions was then launched in early 2017, acting as a platform for co-founders p. leone and caiazzo with more exciting artists soon to be announced. discipline signals is dark and robust from start to finish, with functions of discipline 1 inaugurating the package with resonating kicks, trippy elements and industrial synths. functions of discipline 2 follows a similar aesthetic but heads into a deeper direction with its cavernous atmospherics and glitch inspired effects, making way for laced with its sinister drones and tantalising melodies. spencer parker then remixes laced , concluding matters with rugged drums, energetic hi-hats and a rumbling low-end.

all source material recorded in gran paradiso, july 2015 engineered at odd phasing and echoes, amsterdam nl photography bjnilsen bjnilsen is a composer and sound artist based in amsterdam. his work primarily focuses on the sounds of nature and how they affect humans. recent work has explored the urban acoustic realm and industrial geography in the arctic region of norway and russia. his original scores and soundtracks have featured in theatre, dance performances and film. celebrating 27 years as a recording artist massif trophies is the first solo release for editions mego. in 2015 he set off on a month long hiking trip in gran paradiso to explore the acoustic environments in the alpine landscape. drawn to the monotonous and physical effort that mountains and high altitudes contributes, this became one of the main inspirations for the album, reflecting upon the perception of the landscape during several hours of physical difficulty, let alone rapid weather changes, horizontal thunderstorms and rock avalanches. it is also about the scope of details and perception of the path and the myth of the mountain as the accursed or sacred place. the five pieces contains narratives based on experiences and recordings from the trip.

black truffle is honored to present a new issue of annea lockwoodÆs classic 1970 tape piece tiger balm, unavailable on vinyl for over thirty years, accompanied by two exquisite unreleased works for percussion and voice. created while lockwood was living in the uk, the side-long tiger balm is a singular work within the cannon of tape music. inspired by research into the ritual function of music, the piece explores the possibility of evoking ancient communal memories through sound. breaking entirely with the dynamic language of the musique concrÞte tradition, lockwood uses a select palette of mainly unprocessed sonic elements chosen for their mysterious and erotic characteristics (a purring cat, a heartbeat, gongs, slowed down jaw harp, a tiger, a womanÆs breath, a plane passing overhead), presenting at most two sounds at once. as one sound flows organically into the next, their shared characteristics are highlighted, opening a space of dream logic and mysterious associations between nature and culture, the ancient and the modern. the b-side presents two pieces for percussion recorded here for the first time. amazonia dreaming (1987), performed by dominic donato, uses unaccompanied snare drum and voice to evoke the nocturnal soundscape of the amazon rainforest. unorthodox techniques and materials (marbles, chopsticks, a plastic jar lid) transform the snare into a resonant field of sensual textures.

alex tsiridis of cassegrain debuts on avian as rhyw. the extended ep, which represents the second outing for tsiridis under this moniker, sees the british producer pit a handful of elastic dance-floor workouts alongside a pair of more experimental, ambient reductions. despite careful processing rendering them decidedly monochrome, the dance-floor recordings maintain a curious colour and musicality. lead synth sequences drive much of the work, ducking in and out of the sonic backwater with considerable dynamism – almost hook-like in their execution, sharpened with ample distortion and melding with intricate drum work to create subtle shifts in tone and energy that propel the work forward. whilst reduced in it’s elements, like much of the best of the genre – the music sees those elements hard at work. tsiridis places atypical focus on groove, eschewing a more linear approach in favour of a kind of greyscale funk that finds its potency in the contrast between components. ‘iroquois’ and ‘aversion two’, the beatless compositions that appear on the ep isolate the ambient constituents of the work – with tonal nods to drone and noise musics whilst managing to hold on to the clandestine tunefulness that runs through the whole body of work.

since his untimely death at the all too young age of 32 the world has grown to appreciate the work of j dilla even more than when he was alive. there’s an ethereal quality to jay dee’s works, part boom bap but more mellow. mellow, but never soft. and dilla never stopped making beats, his mpc was by his side until the very end. it now resides in the smithsonian. due the prolific nature of his beat making, the world is blessed to have stacks of dilla material – some coming to light even this many years after his passing. in the world of hip hop, no one’s mother is more famous that ma dukes. go ahead, name check chuck d’s mom or chance the rapper’s mom or ti’s mother – without hitting google. and one of the reasons we all know ma dukes is her tireless effort to maintain dilla’s legacy. this release is yet another step in that direction. presented here, from the official ma dukes collection, are 15 works by jay dee from deep in the vaults, being released on vinyl for the first time.

500 copies limited edition! flash forward is happy to repress one of kerri chandler s most beautiful records.first come first served ! -black vinyl label boss alan russell first met kerri when alan was writing for echoes magazine and kerri was signed (by a&r man johnnie walker) to champion records in the uk. alan was interviewing dee dee brave at a hotel in west london as part of the promotion for her album on champion which was released in 1991. alan was already familiar with kerri s work such as superlover and set if off and with his productions on movin records, so asked about kerri and when told that he was also in london as part of the dee dee s tour, the two met and began talking. kerri was slightly surprised that alan knew all of his early releases and the two bonded. they met again in new york when alan was attending the nms (precursor to the wmc in miami) and stayed in touch. years later when alan had started black vinyl the two met again and alan asked if kerri would do something for his label. kerri soon delivered a dat containing these three tracks. the track my old friend was originally titled for my old friend alan , which alan shortened so it would look better on the label! the rest, as they say, is history.-

one of the most important harmony groups in the entirety of jamaican music, the paragons have a long and complicated history. first formed in the ska years by bob andy and tyrone evans as the duo of andy and ronnie, the group soon expanded to a quartet through the addition of howard barrett and john holt, the latter naturally assuming lead duties, following the subsequent departure of andy, holt, evans and barrett made the paragons the quintessential rock steady trio. they had an incredible run of hits for duke reid and coxsone during the mid-to-late ‘60s, and also issued some self-produced work, before holt’s solo career skyrocketed, leaving the group on the back-burner. then, in the mid-1970s, the paragons reformed, cutting material for new york-based labels such as clocktower and clintones, which led to this intriguing album, which saw material recorded in jamaica at harry j for bunny lee mixed with work cut at bullwackie’s studio in the bronx, along with re-workings of classics such as ‘left with a broken heart’ and ‘memories by the score’ is a whole range of new material, dealing with contemporary themes.

from start to finish ‘twelve’ is a twisted journey through esoteric techno and exemplary of +plattform’s distinct musical aesthetic. tracks like ‘kerala’, ‘wrak’ and ‘nylon’ exhibit deep atmospheres as tantalising synths work their magic. ‘brok’,‘reck’ and ‘ombre’ are more driving by nature, featuring powerful percussion and sinister effects. other tracks, such as ‘dillan’, are mesmerising cacophonies of raw elements combined to devastating effect, whereas ‘morne’ incorporates sweeping pads and syncopated drums for spellbinding results.

cosmopolis is an electronic music release from artist fonemi. this work is inspired by the novel cosmopolis by don delillo, a book that tells of a modern odyssey along the streets of a great metropolis. the four pieces here, composition of cosmopolis, sounds as the soundtrack of an introspective journey rich in ancestral suggestions and forgotten rituals recalls over time. the undervalued atmospheres that characterise the whole work seem to be held in suspension by a percussive magma that marks the passage of the past that becomes present. cosmopolis is a fluid that carries our lost memories.

a strange confluence of sound that sounds part krautrock synth label brain records, part hyperdub. techno haze and synth wormholes with spectacular sound design that has banged at berghain and soundtracked winter night drives. greenspan is known mainly for his work with junior boys and jessy lanza and taraval is a longtime touring member of caribou, but both have released several 12” and eps of electronic exploration over the past few years. inspired by synthesizer minimalists like jd emmanuel, cluster and john carpenter, the two attempted to create a type of dance music with hardware that was indebted to their influences but did not feel intrinsically retrogressive. the idea was to make a type of raw synthesizer and drum machine music that could be listened to beside the hypermodern techno of pearson sound or actress. the cover art is a tribute to a mysterious mural that looms over the hamilton ontario area where the album was recorded. each of the five tracks on the ep were edited down from much longer recording jams which were done with hardware sequencers in real time. the recording was done completely off the floor with no overdubs or added material after the fact.

one half of the junior boys, jeremy greenspan makes his second appearance on jiaolong with the aid of none other than legendary, algorithmic composer, laurie spiegel. those not familiar with her work, spiegel is best known for her use of interactive and algorithmic logic as part of the compositional process, spiegel worked with buchla and electronic music laboratories synthesizers and subsequently many early, often experimental and prototype-level music and image generation systems. in the mid 80s, her most widely used software was the music mouse. here, greenspan works her piece >drums< into a confident dj tool, rolling steadily with angular electronic effects over a solid, weighty pulse. >sirius shake< employs a classic kompakt-style schaffle beat, mapping a curious robotic waltz.

the passport to paradise gang are in fine form as they serve up four more tripped-out disco edits for the globally-minded savant. we take sail with the excellent thru wit waitin, a beefed-up guitar chugger reminiscent of 70s aor in its steady percussive work and misty sax solo. it s the guitar line that really shines here, lifting the tune into funk transcendence in the bridge. anybody out there reaches out to the disco trippers with its northern italian cosmic kitsch feel: starry-eyed synth pads float above reverb-soaked guitar musings and playful french vocal samples. a particular highlight. on the flip, ptp take things south with a soulful west african shuffler guaranteed to elicit some arresting footwork. the ep leaves us with resounding vibrations from the far east: jp wave explores ethereal planes, building up a dense rhythmic fabric punctuated by bass stabs and ornamental chimes. this is a clever bunch of edits for the more discerning selectors and enthusiasts out there- act fast.
